Another wonderful week, filled with skills-based learning, focused on preparation for adulthood. As well as our first Bikeability session of the year, Cherry class have been very busy with their work-related learning. We have been decorating our tulips ready for the Spring Show and we have been cutting and making bunting to sell at our Street Market too! In PE, we have continued to focus on Dance, putting together 2 and 3 movement sequences with some great success. Our learners have been outside, preparing the planting area for our broad beans, which have been measured in class (there is great competitiveness as to whose broad bean plant is the tallest!), ready for planting next week. After our busy My Future event last Friday, Brunch Club was back in full swing this week – our focus this term is lunch options, so we made a range of baguettes that the staff who bought them thoroughly enjoyed; and the learners made their own to take home as well.

In Cedar Class this week, we have been exploring mark making and sentence writing linked to the story of The Ant and the Grasshopper. Some children are now saying their own sentences and then writing them down independently.

We spent some time in the poly tunnel in Work Related Learning / Horticulture, planting flower seeds, and watering our beans, potatoes, and radishes. This also links to our Science learning about plants. This week we learned how plants make seeds to grow new plants. We explored different fruits to find the seeds inside. This included tomatoes, passion fruit, mango, avocado, and orange. We were very surprised to find that our orange didn't have any seeds for us to explore! We learned that seeds come in all shapes and sizes. Our learners are developing a great understanding of how to grow and care for plants.

In Maths we have been making groups and counting them. Some of our learners can even count their groups in twos, fives and tens!

We love our weekly yoga sessions with our lovely yogi, Sam. We use our bodies to stretch and make shapes and learn how to use our breaths to calm our bodies.

We are so proud of all our learners!

This week in Maple class...

Maple Class acted on feedback from their pupil voice questionnaire by organising a train trip, something the learners had expressed a strong interest in. Today, we met Sara at Par train station, who gave us an informative guided tour of the station. The learners had the opportunity to explore different areas, including a visit to the signal box where they learnt how trains are managed and kept safe on the tracks.

Some of the learners confidently spoke over the tannoy, making announcements just like real station staff, which was a fantastic confidence-building experience. We then boarded our train and travelled to St Austell, enjoying the journey and observing the scenery along the way. After spending some time there, we returned back to Par, completing a memorable and engaging trip that brought their ideas to life.

This week in geometry and data handling, the children have been busy exploring shapes and colours through lots of hands‑on, sensory activities. They’ve focused mainly on squares and circles, feeling them, building with them, and spotting them in their environment. Some learners have been practising matching shapes, while others have shown they can find the correct shape when it’s named by an adult, which has been wonderful to see.

In data handling, the class has been exploring colour sorting, working with bright objects in red, green, yellow, and blue. Learners have been grouping items by colour or recognising different colours in the environment. It’s been a great week of playful maths, full of curiosity and discovery.

The learners were able to select the container that they wanted to use and then have a go at pouring, the adults supported by also introducing some key vocabulary of full and empty. They learners showed lots of engagement exploring the different containers and filling them up with water and emptying them in different ways.

Thank you to NHS Peninsula Dental, & Smarter Smiles who attended our school this term for the 2nd of the EYFS/Early Years Fluoride teeth varnishing sessions for this year, and to meet the Maple class for an interactive health advice session.

We were delighted to welcome Smarter Smiles back again to Doubletrees School for a very special visit. They presented us with a certificate and official Bronze accreditation in recognition of the dedication, enthusiasm, and hard work shown by our pupils and staff in promoting the importance of oral health.

This achievement celebrates our ongoing commitment to educating children about caring for their teeth, building positive daily habits, and understanding why good oral hygiene matters. We are incredibly proud of everyone involved for embracing this initiative so wholeheartedly—this recognition is a wonderful milestone for our school community!

Please see below for some healthy and tooth-friendly advice on how to help your child to stay healthy.

Smarter Smiles visited Maple Class to talk about the importance of looking after our teeth. They discussed why keeping our teeth healthy is important and how good dental habits help prevent tooth decay. The class learnt about foods and drinks that are good for their teeth, as well as those that can cause damage if we have them too often.

They also demonstrated the correct way to brush teeth, explaining how long we should brush for and the best technique to make sure all areas of the mouth are cleaned properly. The class enjoyed taking part in the discussion, asking questions, and practising the brushing technique. It was a fun and informative session that helped everyone understand how to keep their smiles healthy. 😁

The air was filled with joyful excitement as bright clouds of colour drifted and swirled all around us, creating a beautiful rainbow haze. There was so much laughter and so many giggles as everyone joined in the fun, sharing handfuls of powder and watching the colours burst into the air. It was a truly wonderful celebration, and everyone had an amazing time getting delightfully, dazzlingly colourful! 🌈✨

Our 'Arctic Adventure' topic truly came to life as we bundled up warm and glided into a winter wonderland for an ice skating experience.

With staff and parents guiding us, we twirled across the ice, laughter echoing all around, creating a morning full of joy and sensory delights.

We felt the cool, glassy ice beneath us and the crisp, icy air whooshing past our cheeks as we floated across the rink. It was as if we’d been transported straight into the heart of the Arctic — a truly magical winter experience to remember. ❄️✨

ABOUT TREWOON 'YARN BOMBERS' AND HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Trewoon Yarn Bombers have just celebrated their 3rdanniversary by handing out nearly 200 Fish and Chip Baby Jumpers and Trauma Teddies to deserving causes.

'We were particularly pleased to supply Doubletrees School with Teddies as they are such a deserving and much needed local environment for our special children. We will be passing on more Teddies when they are available'

Our Chair, Jennifer was delighted when ‘Bomber’ Heather mentioned her daughter, Andrea worked at Doubletrees School and would be pleased to receive some Teddies for their children. One of Jennifer’s granddaughters has special educational needs and currently attends Pencalenick School in Truro. She was aware of the very important work that goes on at Doubletrees.

Andrea Hector gave a very interesting and informative presentation, at our 3rd Anniversary event, on the work that goes on in this special school. Bombers are hoping we will see Andrea again in the future.

In addition to our much needed charity work, we enjoy making serious and fun displays around the Parish. You may have seen some decorating letterboxes, fencing, seats and virtually anything that can be decorated.

We meet once a month to discuss what projects we are working on and what we plan to create in the future.

In addition to our ‘Bombers’ we also host two knit and natter sessions on the 2nd Thursday of the month. You can attend the 2-4pm or the 6-8pm session. Some members attend both! They are advertised under our ‘Chit, Chat, Knit and That’ group name.

Both groups are friendship and wellbeing groups who encourage people who like to knit, crochet, cross-stitch, sew, embroider, lace make or enjoy any other craft. Some are very experienced and some are now learning, everyone is welcome. We also welcome people who would like to come and chat and join us for refreshments.

A few times a year we go to events, especially at Christmas time. This year some members went to the craft fayre at Exeter via Roselyn Coaches and had a lovely day.

You may have seen our Tombola stall at this year’s Sticker Rally. We thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and were made very welcome.

We have another one booked for the Christmas Fayre at Trewoon Village Hall in November. This is when we raise funds to buy yarns etc and hire venues.

If you would like to join us, you will be made very welcome. Generally, we meet at either Trinity Chapel in Trewoon or Trewoon Village. However, we are enthusiastic about meeting at different venues within the Parish.

For further details we have a Facebook page. It is a very enjoyable and inexpensive way of making friends and sometimes learning new crafts.

I would like to remind you of our School Closure Procedure. If the school should be closed for example severe weather, the decision will be made by 7:15 in the morning. We will contact Pupil Transport at the Local Authority who will then contact you. If not, we suggest that you contact the Driver/Passenger Assistant direct if you think there is any problem. It will be important to make sure you have their relevant telephone number(s). Please ask the Driver/Passenger Assistant for their telephone numbers if you do not already have these.

School closures are also listed on the Cornwall Council website at https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/schools-and-education/schools-and-colleges/school-closures-in-emergencies/

It will be your responsibility to contact any short break provider if this is relevant to your child and discuss with them arrangements for any planned visit/stay.

If there should be snow, and it settles during the school day, we will need to close the school. We will make this decision as soon as we can to ensure the safety of the children. We would contact you through our texting service in the first instance. Please ensure you have notified the school office with any change of mobile number.

As you will know the local weather can be quite unpredictable and ‘localised’. If, following weather reports, you have concerns and feel you would rather keep your child at home please report their absence to school as normal (call Reception on 01726 812757) as early as possible.

We will always do our best to keep the school open – but sometimes closure will be the most appropriate step to ensure everyone’s safety.

We understand that closures are frustrating, and we never take the decision to close lightly, but we must keep pupils and staff safety at the forefront of our decisions.

We will be guided by County advice and that of the emergency services. Please continue to monitor school social media pages, emails and our website as we will update on those as necessary.

Yours sincerely,

Heidi Hoskin

The children and their parents enjoyed making spooky crafts, carving pumpkins, and spending quality time together in a relaxed, social setting in the class.

In Juniper class, we dressed up for our Halloween disco and enjoyed making sounds linked to this time of year, such as ghost sounds. We have continued the Halloween theme with making marks using autumnal colours and mixing colours on the light box. One of our favourite activities was the sensory tray with scented gloop and creepy crawlies, where we shared the resources well with our peers using pincer grips to save the insects from getting stuck!

We had the best time at the disco and everyone enjoyed socialising with other class teams, and enjoying each others' company in their spooky wear. Not just learners, but our staff to!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Harvest Festival celebrates the time of year when crops have been gathered from the field and people can reflect and show gratitude for the food they have.

Celebrating harvest dates long into British history, to a time when farmers would give thanks for a good harvest, good weather, and the sharing of food.

We have a collection at school if you wish to donate. We will be donating all the tinned and dried food stuffs to our local Foodbank this year. If you would like to donate, please send in any of the listed items below before the 24th October.

During our RE lesson this week, Maple class took part in a range of activities to celebrate Diwali. We listened to the story of Rama and Sita and had a task of sequencing the key events afterwards. We also tasted traditional samosas, adding a sensory layer to the experience. Afterwards we made Diwali bracelets by threading beads or painted pasta onto string or pipe cleaners. To create a peaceful atmosphere to finish , we listened to calming Indian instrumental music allowing us to fully connect with the cultural elements and the story’s themes to celebrate Diwali.

Our Chair, Jennifer was delighted when ‘Bomber’ Heather mentioned her daughter, Andrea worked at Doubletrees School and would be pleased to receive some Trauma Teddies for their children.

Very best wishes from Trewoon Yarn Bombers and Chit, Chat, Knit and That members.

Looe Town FC Launches Exciting New Comets Football Sessions for Children with Disabilities.

Cornwall FA is delighted to share the news of an inspiring new opportunity for children in the Looe area, as Looe Town FC proudly launches “Comets” – a fun, inclusive football session designed especially for boys and girls aged 5 to 11 with disabilities.

Comets is part of The FA’s national initiative aimed at creating a welcoming, flexible and playful football experience for young people with a broad range of impairments and health conditions. As a pan-disability programme, Comets brings children together in a safe, supportive environment where the only rule is: Just Be You.

Starting this June, sessions will run every Monday from 6–7pm at Looe Town FC (PL13 1NN) and are open to children and families looking for a place to play, have fun, and build friendships through football.

Rachael, one of the lead coaches at Looe Town FC, shared her excitement:

“It means a lot for Looe Town Football Club to be able to offer this activity to local children and their families. Our aim is to build up the opportunities available at the club, and this is a really important one to start with - especially with the increasing number of children with SEN needs in local schools and the limited resources available in the area.”

The sessions are carefully planned to include activities that help improve balance, coordination, strength and agility, while also nurturing teamwork and positive social interaction. A sensory area will be available, providing a calm space with fidget toys and quiet time for those who may need a break from the action.

“We also recognise that friendships are a basic need for everyone,” Rachael added. “What better way to build positive relationships with others than in a safe space full of fun and energy.”

Both Rachael and her coaching partner Ella are fully trained and committed to making each session a joyful, pressure-free experience where every child can feel confident and included

The new Kitchen Garden at Doubletrees has started to see some changes with the pile of granite stone being used to create a 'herb spiral'. What an improvement, and it will be planted with a nice range of plants by our learners, in the next few days.

Contractors 'Enviroscape' have been busy over the weekend, removing the large concrete containers sited in the 'Sensory Garden' for some years. It was a big job, and the big toys came out!

The planters will be replaced with large wooden ones with trellis attached to allow a more varied planting scheme for our learners to enjoy.

We will keep you updated as to how our new space develops; courtesy of a grant that we received from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Next week is Science week with the theme of Change and Adapt 🌱

Let's celebrate Science Week by growing a sunflower from a seed and watching it transform into a beautiful, towering plant!

How to Participate:

Get Your Seeds: Pick up sunflower seeds from your local garden center or order them online.

Plant Your Seeds: Find a sunny spot in your garden or window sill. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep.

Watch and Learn: Water your seeds regularly and observe the changes as they sprout, grow, and bloom. 🌻

Share Your Journey: Post photos and updates of your sunflower's progress on our Facebook page or share with your class teacher!

Growing a plant from a seed teaches us about plant biology, growth cycles and the importance of adaptation in nature. It is a perfect challenge for all ages, and a great family activity.
