Sports Premium

Sport Premium is a government funded payment aimed at improving and increasing the provision of Primary PE, sports and physical activity in schools across the country. The amount of money paid is based on the number of primary aged pupils in the school and it is ring-fenced, meaning it has to be spent solely on PE and sport provision to enable primary aged children to develop healthier lifestyles.

At Doubletrees School, we have utilised this funding and made physical activity and physical experiences an important part of school life. We have invested in resources and staff development to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to get involved in physical activity and develop healthy life styles, benefiting from the funding regardless of their sporting abilities.

Clear development plans have been put in place and we are closely monitoring the impact of these actions upon the school and our learners.

As a School we are really excited about this funding and the opportunities that will benefit the school and most importantly the learners.

Swimming Competency Statement

At Doubletrees School, all pupils have complex learning, physical, sensory and/or medical needs. Consequently, the national DfE swimming competency measures—swimming 25 metres, using a range of strokes, and performing safe self‑rescue—are not appropriate indicators of progress for the majority of our learners.

Cohort Information

2024–25 cohort: 6 pupils in Year 6

2025–26 cohort: 7 pupils in Year 6

All pupils in both cohorts accessed regular, personalised sessions in our on‑site pool.

Swimming sessions at Doubletrees

Swimming sessions form an essential part of our physical and sensory curriculum and focus on:

Physical Development

  • Supported movement work
  • Postural development
  • Joint mobilisation and muscle tone management
  • Opportunities for increased physical activity in a safe, warm-water environment

Sensory Regulation

  • Calm, controlled sensory input
  • Opportunities for self‑regulation
  • Increased engagement and readiness to learn

Water Safety and Water Confidence

  • Positive engagement in water
  • Understanding of simple water-safety routines
  • Confidence entering and exiting the pool safely
  • Awareness of adults’ instructions, signals and safety boundaries

Independence and Personal Care Skills

  • Changing and dressing routines
  • Showering before and after pool use
  • Recognising and organising personal belongings
  • Following visual sequences or communication cues
These are key life skills, tailored to each pupil’s EHCP outcomes.

Swimming Awards

  • Some learners follow swimming or water‑confidence award schemes, selected to match their developmental profile and functional ability.
However, most learners do not reach the standard required for reporting against the DfE swimming benchmarks, due to the significant nature of their complex needs.

Statutory Reporting Summary

All Year 6 pupils in 2024–25 and 2025–26 accessed regular swimming sessions.

None of the pupils are able to meet the national curriculum benchmarks for swimming competency.

  • Pupils made meaningful progress in:
  • physical development
  • sensory regulation
  • water confidence and safety awareness
  • independence and self‑care skills
  • personalised therapeutic and communication targets
  • A small number accessed appropriate accredited award pathways, aligned to their needs.
