'Smarter Smiles' Visit for School Fluoride Varnish & Dental Health Advice for Early Years aged children.

Thank you to NHS Peninsula Dental, & Smarter Smiles who attended our school this week for the 2nd of the EYFS/Early Years Fluoride teeth varnishing sessions for this year, and to meet the Maple class for an interactive health advice session.
Please see below for some healthy and tooth-friendly advice on how to help your child to stay healthy.

Smarter Smiles visited Maple Class today to talk about the importance of looking after our teeth. They discussed why keeping our teeth healthy is important and how good dental habits help prevent tooth decay. The class learnt about foods and drinks that are good for their teeth, as well as those that can cause damage if we have them too often.

They also demonstrated the correct way to brush teeth, explaining how long we should brush for and the best technique to make sure all areas of the mouth are cleaned properly. The class enjoyed taking part in the discussion, asking questions, and practising the brushing technique. It was a fun and informative session that helped everyone understand how to keep their smiles healthy. 😁

What do Smarter Smiles do?  They provide Oral health promotion work with and for children, which includes:

Formally accrediting oral health promotion schemes in early years and primary school settings

Training the trainers to reach an even wider audience, including health and non-health professionals who work with children

Advocating the integration of oral health into targeted home visits by health/social care workers

Promoting supervised tooth brushing schemes in early years settings and primary schools

Providing a fluoride varnish programme in primary schools, in areas where children are at greatest risk of poor oral health

Promoting a ‘whole-school’ approach to oral health promotion and prevention in the primary and secondary school curricula, for example, to make plain drinking water freely available, provide a choice of food, drinks and snacks that are sugar-free or low in sugar and form part of a healthier diet (including those offered in vending machines), and promote oral health information for parents, carers and children, including details on how to access local dental services

Fluoride Varnish Application in Schools:

Our Smarter Smiles dental care professionals attend primary schools which are at the highest risk of experiencing dental disease to provide the dental professional intervention of applying fluoride varnish on to children’s teeth within the school setting.
