Careers Week @ Doubletrees School. 3-7 March 2025. Emergency Services visits!

What are the benefits of learning about careers? Empowering Our Learners for the Future Beyond Doubletrees!

In today’s rapidly changing world, it’s more important than ever for our learners to start thinking about their future careers and interests at an early age. By exploring different professions and learning and understanding about various career paths, our learners not only gain valuable insights into the workforce but also develop essential skills that will help them succeed later in life, with the choices they make.

1. Making Informed Decisions

One of the key benefits of learning about careers is that it helps learners at Doubletrees to make informed decisions about their education and future paths. Understanding the skills and qualifications needed for specific jobs allows learners to choose extracurricular activities that align with their interests and goals. This knowledge helps them feel more confident in their academic choices and sets them up for success in their future career interests and independent living targets.

2. Identifying Interests and Passions

Exploring careers also provides our learners with an opportunity to discover their passions. By learning about various fields, from 'People who help us' (like our Emergency services) to food hygiene/healthy living; our learners can identify what interests them the most and how other people can help them in their roles. This process of self-discovery can motivate them to pursue areas that spark their curiosity, leading to greater engagement in school and a clearer sense of direction in life.

Our Careers Week at Doubletrees!

To begin Careers Week, we enjoyed a visit from St Austell Ambulance Station (South West Ambulance Service) to explain their job roles and how they help people in an emergency. Our learners were taught the basics of CPR and had a try at bandaging their peers.  A super look into the role of the ambulance crew!

We also had a visit from Devon & Cornwall Police!  Everyone engaged superbly and listened well, as a PC and Community Support officer told us all about the different roles they have in the Police force. They talked to us about different types of crimes they get called out to, and also how they help out and care for vulnerable people in our communities. They then showed us everything they carry with them, like their radio, body camera and a baton. After this, we went out to the police car and explored what was in the car before getting to sit in the front and turn the sirens on! Thank you for coming to see us!

To finish off our careers week, we enjoyed a visit from St Austell Fire Brigade.  They came in to class with us and explained all the different things they do in their job, like putting out different kinds of fires, helping people and animals that get stranded or stuck and helping people who have been involved in car accidents. They also talked to us about their equipment and let us try some of their safety clothing on!  After this, we went outside to see the fire engine! We were lucky enough to use the hose and sit inside. We absolutely loved it. Thank you St Austell Fire Brigade for your visit!

In all, a fantastic insight into the roles of 'People who help us' in our communities.  We listened carefully about how we contact our emergency services and how they can help us.

Our learners especially enjoyed the practical and 'noisy' interactions with the emergency vehicles!
