Doubletrees Offer

Who We Are

Doubletrees School is a specialist school. Our pupils have multiple, complex and significant needs, including significant cognitive delay. By the end of their school career, the pupils are often working well below pre-key stage 1 standards in most areas. Progress will typically be in very small steps. Our pupils can ‘safely’ tolerate other pupils in their learning spaces. We are part of the Special Partnership Trust, working collaboratively to deliver high-quality provision tailored to individual needs.

All of our pupils have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), and all admissions to the school are managed through the Special Educational Needs (SEN) process with Cornwall Local Authority.

In addition to a learning need, learners may also have other associated needs in:

  • sensory or medical needs, (visual, hearing impairment, epilepsy, life limiting conditions etc.)
  • emotional/social needs (including mental health needs)
  • communication and interaction difficulties, (autistic spectrum conditions, speech and language difficulties)
  • physical needs (e.g. mobility needs, physical disabilities, wheelchair users).

How We Support Children’s Needs

At Doubletrees School, pupils learn in small, nurturing groups led by a qualified teacher and supported by skilled support staff. Group sizes and staff ratios are adapted to meet individual needs—some pupils work well in a group of around 10, while others benefit from smaller groups.

Every pupil has a Personalised Learning Goal (PLG) *Please note, in some schools, these may also be referred to as Individual Education Plans (IEPs), which help us deliver personalised teaching, support, and interventions in line with their EHCP.  Interventions  may take place in the classroom, in small groups, or through one-to-one sessions, this is decision is made based on pupil needs.

We also access therapy and advisory services in line with pupils' plans, including:

  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy (commissioned additionally by the school)

Specialist Intervention Team support from the Trust advises staff and provides therapeutically informed training for effective practice.

We are committed to partnership working through a collaborative approach with internal and external agencies. Our staff have a range of specialist qualifications to promote personalised learning throughout the school day.

Our Curriculum Pathways

Our curriculum is carefully designed to reflect the diverse needs of our pupils. It is delivered through clearly defined pathways, each including a strong focus on Preparation for Adulthood.

Pupils take part in;

  • Core academic subjects (adapted to recognise needs)
  • Life and independence skills
  • Enrichment opportunities such as:
  • Outdoor education
  • Swimming
  • The arts
  • Educational visits
  • Community activities
  • Work experience opportunities

Health and Medical Support

Some of our pupils have additional health or care needs. While we make every effort to meet these needs, we do not have on-site health practitioners or a school nurse. Support requiring healthcare professionals must be arranged through multi-agency working.
